2024 SPRING HOUSE
WELCOME TO THE PIEDMONT HOCKEY CLUB 2024 SPRING HOUSE /REC SEASON
For the 2024 season the Piedmont Hockey Club’s Spring House/Rec youth ice hockey program will run from April 2 through June 16. It is for players ages 5-18 who meet or exceed the prerequisite experience requirements for each age level. Full hockey gear is required at all age levels. All participants must be registered with USA Hockey for the 2023-2024 season. USA Hockey registrants after April 1 will be assigned to the 2024-2025 hockey year. Registration is now open, either with the link on this page, or under the registration tab. Questions about registration may be directed to Coach Leo Mullin, the House/Rec Hockey Director.
We are accepting House coaching applications. The program can only be as strong as the volunteers who step up to lead. Contact House/Rec Director Leo Mullin for more information.
FROM THE BEGINNING -- INTRODUCTORY HOCKEY PROGRAMS AT THE HAYMARKET ICEPLEX
In addition to its many Learn to Skate programs for the various ages, the Haymarket Iceplex offers on a recurring basis introductory-level programs for prospective hockey players. These programs are tailored to prepare graduates for direct entry into the Piedmont Predator house program and for potential growth into Predator Travel-level competition. Parents/families looking to satisfy their curiosity and gain hands-on insight into the challenging and fun sport of hockey can have their skater take to the ice in full hockey gear without having to make an investment in buying the equipment. TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE
Does your child have a basic ability to ice skate and wish to see if hockey is for him/her? The Try Hockey for Free Program at the Haymarket Iceplex is totally free of cost and provides the opportunity to satisfy his/her curiosity and gain the confidence necessary to begin participation in an exciting sport. The Iceplex will provide, on a loan basis, all the non-personal gear necessary to take to the ice. Check out the program details at www.haymarketiceplex.com .
LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY (LTPH) PROGRAM Detailed information, session dates, fees and prerequisites, and registration procedures for the two courses described briefly below are available at www.haymarketiceplex.com.
LTPH1 Ages 5-9 (Birth Years 2015-2018)
LTPH1 provides 12 on-ice periods over a six-week span to introduce a skater to hockey skating skills, basic puckhandling, passing and shooting exercises and mini-scrimmages. Graduates of LTPH1 can seamlessly transition to house hockey at the beginning of, or during, the house hockey season.
LTPH Ages 10-16 (Birth Years 2008-2014)
LTPH 10-16 includes the same session content and goals as the LTPH1 course but restructured in format and delivery to acknowledge the learning curve and older age of the registrants. Graduates of LTPH 10-16 can seamlessly transition to house hockey.
PIEDMONT HOCKEY CLUB 2024 HOUSE/REC HOCKEY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND SCHEDULE
The program will consist of a total of 20 ice slots per age group. Holiday “No skate” dates are May 24-May 27
For 2024 Spring season at the PHC there will be five divisions within spring house:
6U/8U Birth Years 2019-2016
10U Rec Birth Years 2015-2014
12U Rec Birth Years 2013-2012
14U Rec Birth Years 2011-2010
18U Rec * Birth Years 2009-2006*
6U/8U House
Players will be divided into age and skill based small groups. Monday practice Ice sessions will be station- based practices and small area games in line with USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM). Saturday practice will include team-based half-ice or cross-ice scrimmages.
10U-18U Rec
PHC 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U Rec teams will compete in the spring Intra-County Hockey League (ICL) against teams from the Potomac Patriot Hockey Club. Spring season will consist of practices, a minimum of 6 games, and end-of-season playoffs.
All ICL games will be played on Sundays beginning on April 28 at the Prince William Ice Center or the Haymarket Iceplex.
The ICL for Spring 2024 and afterward will be structured in conformance with the USA Hockey age group criteria
The ICL will be competitive contact only.
Days/Times listed below for the various age categories are approximate and subject to modifications to enable additional ice time opportunities if warranted by final registration numbers.
6U/8U House Birth Years 2019-2015 – $695.
Prerequisite: Preferred: LTPH1; Acceptable: LTS/ Hockey 3/4 from the Haymarket Iceplex LTS program and an on-ice evaluation; or one previous season of house hockey experience
Mondays 5:00-6:00pm
Saturdays 9:30-10:30am

10U Rec/ICL Birth Years 2015-2014 – $795
Prerequisite: Preferred: LTPH 1 or LTPH2; Acceptable: LTS/ Hockey 3/4 from the Haymarket Iceplex LTS program with an on-ice skill evaluation; or one or more previous seasons of house/rec hockey experience.
Tuesdays 6:00-7:20pm (practice)
Sundays ICL Games, time/location TBD
Players will be divided into equivalently-skilled teams. Practice sessions (Tuesday) will include station-based drills, partial/full ice skills sessions and team-level activities. ICL Games (Sunday) will be full ice. This is a competitive contact group.
12U Rec/ICL Birth Years 2013-2012 – $795
Prerequisite: LTPH10-16; an individual skill evaluation; or a minimum of one previous season of organized hockey experience.
Tuesdays 6:40-8:00pm (practice)
Sundays ICL Games, time/location TBD
Players will be divided into equivalently-skilled teams. Practice sessions (Tuesday) will include station-based drills, full/partial ice skills and team-level activity. ICL Games (Sunday) will be full ice. This is a competitive contact group.
14U Rec Birth Years 2011-2010 – $795
Prerequisite: LTPH10-16; individual skill evaluation; or a minimum of one previous season of organized hockey experience.
Tuesdays 7:30-8:50pm (practice)
Sundays ICL Games, time/location TBD
Players will be divided into equivalently-skilled teams. Practice sessions (Tuesday) will full/partial ice skills sessions and team-level activity. ICL Games (Sunday) will be full ice. This is a competition-contact group.
18U Rec Birth Years 2009-2006 – $795
Prerequisite: LTPH10-16; individual skill evaluation; or a minimum of one previous season of organized hockey experience.
* NOTE: Participation of BY 2006 players is open only to those players who did not play travel hockey at any level in the 2023-2024 season.
Tuesdays 8:10pm-9:30pm
Sundays ICL Games, time/location TBD
Players will be divided into equivalently-skilled teams. Practice sessions (Tuesday) will full/partial ice skills sessions and team-level activity. ICL Games (Sunday) will be full ice. This is a competition-contact group.
ICL 2024 OPERATING RULES AND PROCEDURES
The 2024 ICL shall consist of teams from the Piedmont Hockey Club and the Potomac Patriot Hockey Club. The ICL is a co-ed, youth hockey league in which the majority of players on all teams shall have played recently at the house-rec level.
Teams shall be formed in the following age-group divisions:
10U – Birthyears 2014-2015
12U – Birthyears 2012-2013
14U – Birthyears 2010-2011
17U – Birthyears 2006-2007-2008-2009
NOTE: Birthyear 2016 and younger players are not allowed to play up to 10U. The ICL is a competitive-contact league. Birthyear 2012 players, with club director approval, may play up to 14U.
Unless modified or changed by these. ICL rules and operating instructions the regular season rules of the CCHL are applicable and will be in force.
The ICL regular season shall consist of 6 games for each team. The ICL will conclude with a championship playoff inclusive of all teams. (still working on format for championship. Assume 2-game minimum for all teams)
All ICL games shall be played at the Haymarket Iceplex (HIP) or the Prince William Ice Center. (PWICE) Each club is responsible for acquiring in advance sufficient ice slots from its home rink to accommodate the games to be played at that location.
Preferred game day for all regular season games shall be Sunday, beginning April 28. If necessary due to ice constraints, regular season games may be conducted on Saturdays, not earlier than April 27. Games may not begin earlier than 7:00am and cannot begin after 6:30pm.
Game duration shall be scheduled as 1 hour 20 minutes of ice time with an additional 10 minutes provided for ice resurfacing,
Each game will consist of three 15 minute stopped-clock periods. CCHL rules for timekeeping shall be used. (Running clock occasions, 3rd period time remaining, etc)
For age groups with more than one team from each hockey club, each club shall form teams as equally-skilled as possible. A and AA level travel players shall be divided equally among teams to the extent possible.
Player eligibility: No player who competed at the AAA level in the 2023-2024 season may participate in the 2024 ICL.
The ICL is a competitive-contact league at all age levels. Body checking is not permitted.
Body-checking and roughing penalties will be assessed at a minimum as double minor penalties.
Any head contact foul shall be assessed as a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct penalty.
Any player who accrues three (3) penalties of any type in a single game shall be assessed a game misconduct penalty and be suspended from participation in their team’s next ICL league game. A double minor penalty is counted as two penalties.
Any team that accrues a total of 10 penalties in a single game shall have its head coach suspended for the team’s next scheduled ICL game.
Any player or coach who is assessed two game misconduct penalties during the regular season shall be suspended for the remainder of the season – including playoffs.
Any player or coach who is assessed a game misconduct during the playoffs shall be suspended for the remaining games of the playoff.
