Girls 19U Advance to Quarterfinals

The Piedmont 19U Girls team competed in the USA Hockey Girls Tier 2 National Championships held in Irvine, CA from March 30, 2023 to April 2, 2023, advancing out of the round robin and into the quarterfinal round.  The Predators started off strong with a 7-1 win against the Montana Wolves, paced by 5 goals from Autumn Frear and one each from Zaneta Kocourkova and Isabel Hernandez-Wilson.  Assists came from Madison Lucas (3), Emily Permut (2), Arianna Evans, Faith Jordan, Hope Dondero, and Kocourkova.  Maggie Cowden got the win in goal, giving up just one goal on 17 shots.  The Preds continued their strong play the next day with a 5-1 win over a highly ranked South Anchorage Oilers team.  The team was led by Ella Phillips with 3 goals and 1 assist and Kocourkova with 2 goals and 3 assists.  Also chipping in with assists were Frear (2), Zoie Kyle, Kiran Flieg, and Jordan.  Liz Moller played strong in net, getting the win and yielding only one goal on 27 shots.   The Preds clinched a quarterfinal berth in moving to 2-0 for the tournament.  Game three against the Jr. Flyers saw the Preds start slowly, falling behind 4-0 after two periods.  A third period comeback cut the deficit in half, but the result was a 4-2 loss.  Frear scored both goals, with assists from Phillips and Kocourkova.  In the quarterfinals, the Preds faced the NYC Cyclones, falling behind 3-1 early, but rallying to tie it at 3-3 in the second period.  A very late goal in the 2nd put the Cyclone ahead 4-3, and the Predators were unable to tie it, eventually giving up a late empty net goal to lose 5-3, despite outshooting the Cyclones 11-6 in the third period and 32-20 in the game.  Kocourkova, Frear, and Emily Townsend scored, and assists came from Lucas, Permut, and Dondero.
