The Haymarket Iceplex is proud to make the official announcement that we have named Hagen Nemzek Hockey Director.
Hagen is a Gainesville native with over 20 years of playing experience. He also has over 7 years of coaching experience teaching lessons, camps, clinics and currently holds a USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching Certification.
Growing up, Hagen started playing roller hockey at the age of 5. He later transitioned to ice hockey at 8 years old with the Reston Raiders Hockey club where he played house hockey until he made the jump to AAA for the Virginia Statesmen. After spending 2 years at the AAA level Hagen then, at the age of 15, started his junior hockey career.
Hagen had a lengthy junior career playing 6 years with different teams all around the country. He played for the Virginia Statesmen (CHA), Virginia Express (CHA), Frederick Freeze (CHA), Mass Maple Leafs (ESHL), Washington Jr. Nats (AJHL), Great Falls Americans (AWHL) and Helena Bighorns (AWHL). Hagen played for a Junior A National Championship his last year of juniors and has many accomplished throughout his junior career being selected/nominated for many All Star Games. He also holds multiple scoring titles and has been nominated for MVP performances on many occasions.
After his last season of junior hockey, Hagen signed a professional contract with the Louisiana Ice Gators of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). Unfortunately, he was injured during the off season and was unable to attend training camp.
Frustrated, Hagen took a 4 year break from playing the game he loved at a competitive level. He worked at the Haymarket Iceplex, doing whatever was needed. He spent 3 years behind the front desk, driving the Zamboni, coaching, and teaching lessons. He also participated in local adult leagues.
But, the competitive hockey world was not finished with Hagen. He signed a professional contract for the 2017-2018 season to play for the Akers/Strangnas Hockey Club competing in Sweden’s Division 2 HockeyTvaan. He played there for 2 seasons being one of their most point productive players and also was selected for the league’s All Star Game.
After 2 seasons of professional hockey, Hagen has decided to settle down in Northern Virginia with his wife, Brittany, sons Riley, 9, and Cullen, 2.
Hagen’s responsibilities will include designing and running camps and clinics at the rink, he will be tasked with growing our hockey program for ages 4-10 years old. He will also be serve as Hockey Advisor to the Piedmont Hockey Club, along with coaching the 10U Sky team.
Haymarket Iceplex General Manager Ron Evans had this to say about Hagen. “I see a lot of young professional coaches come and go. While a lot of them have plenty of playing experience, few have played at the level Hagen has. But Hagen has much more than that. He has kids of his own at the ages of the kids he will be teaching and coaching. So, he has experience dealing with kids that age. He is a certified USA Hockey Director and has a level 4 USA Hockey CEP. He has playing experience, skills training and coaching experience, parenting experience, and a high level of USA Hockey coaching education. It’s almost as if Hagen has trained for this job his whole life. We look forward to seeing what Hagen can offer our players.”
