In response to recent questions:  Yes, there will be a NHL/NHLPA/Washington Capitals Free Hockey Gear program this season.  Entitled "Learn to Play", the program this season will be for new hockey players ages 5-9.  Enrollees must have a basic ability to skate on ice but may not have had previous organized ice hockey participation.  The Haymarket Iceplex and the Piedmont Hockey Club have committed to host four "Learn to Play" sessions at the Iceplex between September 2017 and March 2018.  Each session will be six weeks in duration with two ice times each week:  Tuesday and Thursday 5:00-5:50pm.  Session dates are:

Sep 5 - Oct 12  Completed

Oct 17 - Nov 30 (no skate 11/21 and 11/23)  Completed

Dec 5 - Jan 25 (no skate 12/21 - 1/2)  In Progress

Jan 30 - Mar 8  Open for Registration

The "Learn to Play" program is included within the Iceplex' "Learn to Play Hockey" program.  A single learning plan, a single instructor.  With the "Learn to Play" program registrants receive free hockey gear to keep; with the Iceplex' "Learn to Play Hockey" program registrants, ages 4-10, do not receive free gear; however, the Iceplex will provide loaner gear, if requested, at no charge for the duration of the session.

"Learn to Play" participants MUST register and pay through an online portal set up by the NHL.  This portal is:

www.learntoplay.nhl.com/capitals

Registrants on this portal are paying their fees directly to the NHL, not to the Haymarket Iceplex or to the Piedmont Hockey Club.  This portal is open now.  Program fee is $175.

Following registration on the portal, Iceplex participants will be contacted by Iceplex staff with specific information on the free gear and how to size it to your skater.

Free gear includes skates, socks, shin pads, hockey pants (breezers), elbow pads, gloves, shoulder/chest pads, helmet, stick and a bag to hold it all.  Our first-session registrants are fitted out and ready to go; we will hold "fitting out"  in October to get our participants in the second session fully geared up.
