U16 SKY WINS THANKSGIVING CONGRESSIONAL CUP!

The Piedmont Predators U16 Sky team competed in the local My Hockey Tournaments Congressional Cup this past Thanksgiving weekend.

The first game saw the Predators tie a tough Canadian Scarborough Ice Raiders 3 – 3, with goals being scored by Grady Hesse, Malcolm McGlasson, and Owen Spicer, with Spicer’s goal being shorthanded with an amazing set up from the magic of Jack Murray.  Josh Stone turned away 31 of 34 shots in the tie for a 91% save percentage.

In game 2, the Predators overcame a 2 goal deficit to beat the Triad Storm U16 AA team 3 – 2.  With Hesse, Bryan Bruggeworth, and Brian McCauley tallying the goals.

Game 3 was a defensive battle with Josh Stone holding the Southern Maryland Sabres to 1 goal, resulting in a 1 – 1 tie.  Defensemen Dylan Carpenter, Anthony Zervoudis, Ryan Wilson, Zachary Evans, and Easton Evans contributed to the team’s efforts.  Bruggeworth netted the team’s only goal.

Needing a win to advance to the championship game, the team beat the Warwick Wildcats 4 – 2.  Aidan McGaughy scored, Malcolm McGlasson added 2, while Easton Evans notched the game winner.

In the championship game, the Southern Maryland Sabres jumped out to a commanding 4 – 1 lead by the middle of the second period.  Morgan Galu was called to action in goal mid-way through the second period and held the Sabres scoreless for the rest of the game.  Goals by McCauley and Wilson (2) tied the score at 4.  Then, late game heroics of Owen Spicer netted the game winner with 3.5 seconds remaining in regulation.
